Celtic enter Old Firm rivalry just two wins away from title

Soccer Betting Lines

03/09/2007 - Glasgow, Scotland (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The biggest game on the Scottish Premier League calendar each year is the Old Firm rivalry between Glasgow inhabitants Celtic and Rangers. The two teams will square off for the third time this season on Sunday at Celtic Park with Rangers looking to even the score with their old nemesis.

After falling 1-0 to AC Milan in the second leg of their Champions League Round of 16 matchup on Wednesday, the Hoops can now turn attention to putting the finishing touches on their second consecutive SPL crown. Gordon Stratchan's men own a 19-point cushion over their city rivals, and are just two wins away from clinching the league crown.

The SPL title is just a formality at this point for Celtic, but you can bet that this contest will be filled with the same intensity that the other two meetings this season had.

The first time the two clashed at Celtic Park, the Hoops walked away with a 2-0 victory and followed that up with a hard-fought 1-1 draw at the Ibrox in December. It is bad enough for Rangers to have watch Celtic dominate the way they have all season, but the Ibrox club would have a very difficult time going into the summer without getting a win against their hated rivals.

With a seven-point cushion on both Hearts and Aberdeen for second place, Rangers look to be a good bet to hold on to the final Champions League spot. The club is coming off of a 1-1 draw with Osasuna in their Round of 16 UEFA Cup match, and has won its last three SPL contests. If nothing else, Rangers would take solace in the fact they were able to delay Celtic's league-title celebration just a bit longer.

Saturday's SPL action includes a big contest of its own when Aberdeen and Hearts, level on points in the top four, get together at Pittodrie Stadium, a middle-of-the-table clash between Kilmarnock and Inverness and a matchup of Falkirk and Hibernian at Easter Road Stadium. Saturday also features the bottom four clubs getting together, with St Mirren and Dunfermline stuck in the bottom two spots and meeting up at East End Park and Dundee United entertaining Motherwell.

2007 NFL Football Betting Preview

“You play to win the game!”

Those are the words of notoriously intense head coach Herman Edwards. Unfortunately, from a bettors’ perspective, most coaches don’t feel that way about the NFL preseason. August is a time to evaluate young players, finalize the depth chart and pray your star players stay healthy.

The trick to making money during the exhibition schedule is identifying coaches – like Edwards – who can’t stand losing even when there's nothing on the line.

The New York Jets betting won 15 of 21 preseason games and went 14-7 against the spread (ATS) during Edwards’s five-year tenure with the club. In his first season as the Kansas City Chiefs field boss, the team improved from 0-4 to 2-2.

Identifying win-a-holics like Edwards is a good start if you plan betting the preseason – even though most say you shouldn’t ... but what the hell do they know anyway?

Here’s a brief rundown of two teams that have a habit of winning during the second-stringers’ season, and another club that has a good chance of exceeding this year.

New York Giants betting lines

Playing in the media hub of North America can be stressful but the press can’t write anything negative about the way Tom Coughlin’s boys play in the preseason. The Giants won and covered all four games last summer, improving their record to 7-1 both straight up (SU) and against the spread over the last two years.

Coughlin has shown he’s not afraid to give his starters more time in the second preseason game than most of his colleagues, no doubt one of the reasons his team has been so dominant.

Dallas Cowboys betting lines

Bettors can count on America’s team early on. The Cowboys are 14-6 both SU and ATS since 2002 in warm-up contests. Former coach Bill Parcells, the coach of the team the last four years, has an intimidating, in-your-face presence – surely a reason Dallas has had so much early success.

The Big Tuna won’t be strolling the sidelines with looks of disgust, but new coach Wade Phillips will be anxious to make a good first impression for owner Jerry Jones.

Dallas plays the Indianapolis Colts and the Denver Broncos before things get serious. They then face the Houston Texans in their third contest (the game starters see most game time) and finish off with the Minnesota Vikings.

Expect a Dallas team able to walk away with another 3-1 preseason record.

Oakland Raiders betting lines

This team scored a league-worst 12 offensive touchdowns last season, so the rookies and veterans each have something to prove. There’s a bounty of first-unit jobs up for grabs and plenty of bodies competing for those slots.

First-time head coach Lane Kiffin will be eager to impress an owner who employs the philosophy, “Just win, baby!”

The 32-year-old Kiffin has to command respect from a locker room full of players older than him. All of these factors should lead to purpose in preseason.

Don’t forget: before playing like a team that belonged in NFL Europe, Oakland went 4-1 (both SU and ATS) in exhibition games.

The 2009 AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds have been released and Denver Broncos' running back Knowshon Moreno has been made the opening favorite.

Bet NFL Sports Lines

Moreno was selected in the first round of April's NFL draft and is expected to carry the rushing load for the Broncos this season. And with Jay Cutler now in Chicago, Moreno might be expected to be Denver's entire offense.

Betting Lines from sports betting lines have made Moreno a 5/2 favorite to win this year's Offensive Rookie of the Year Award. Fellow running back Chris “Beanie” Wells (Arizona Cardinals) is right behind Moreno at 7/2, while Donald Brown (Indianapolis Colts) and receiver Michael Crabtree (San Francisco 49ers) are 5/1 to win. Quarterbacks Mark Sanchez (New York Jets) and Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions) are 7/1 and 8/1, respectively.

A couple of players who present some value are Josh Freeman, Shonn Green and Darrius Heyward-Bey.

Freeman needs to beat out Byron Leftwich to become the starting quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but if he does, he has a lot or raw talent and could use the weapons around him (i.e. Kellen Winslow Jr. and Antonio Bryant) to be very successful in his first season.

Green enters a crowded backfield in New York, but considering both Thomas Jones and Leon Washington are unhappy about their contract situations and might holdout, the former Iowa product could become the Jets' primary back.

Everyone was shocked when Al Davis took Heyward-Bey with the eighth overall pick in April's draft, but the kid has a tremendous amount of talent and if quarterback JaMarcus Russell takes the next step this year, the former Maryland product could blossom. Plus, Heyward-Bey will be looking to prove the people wrong who said Oakland should have taken Michael Crabtree with the No. 8 pick.

And if you're looking for a deep sleeper, check out Pat White at 30/1. He enters the Miami Dolphins vaunted “Wild Cat” offense and could be a big time playmaker.
